Time for another update on news about poverty!
First up, UNICEF published the 2025 version of its flagship report, namely the State of the World’s Children. It’s filled with the latest statistics on global child poverty, a discussion of five policy pillars to reduce child poverty, policy highlights and children stories.
Second, a report by the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights discussed how the rollback of welfare support and austerity has fuelled the far right. Shorter opinion pieces that explore this can be found here and here.
Third, a recently published paper by Catherine Thomas and colleagues looks at the potential for psychosocial interventions to reduce poverty and finds evidence for the importance of such interventions being ‘culturally wise’. In the case of Niger, where the interventions were implemented, this is by supporting relational agency (as opposed to personal agency).
Fourth, a piece in The Conversation by myself outlines what is needed to ensure that new housing developments are spaces where everyone can thrive, notably residents with lower incomes. This follows the full report that was discussed in July’s episode.
Finally, a shout out to future guests! There’s much to look forward to, watch this space…!
