Episode #43: Poverty Unpacked – March chat

Child poverty in the UK is high and on the rise. This month’s chat discusses the latest welfare cuts and their implications, research on intergenerational poverty and a call for input into a roadmap for eradicating poverty beyond growth.

Figures by the Child Poverty Action Group show that 4.5 million children in the UK grow up in poverty.

The Institute of Fiscal Studies estimates that the two-child limit pushed 250,000 children into poverty. Action for Children indicate that 600,000 could be lifted out of poverty by removing the cap.

This article on the intergenerational persistence of poverty in five high-income countries points to the stickiness of intergenerational poverty in the US compared to other countries, including the UK, and the importance of redistribution through taxes and transfers.

A reminder of The Empathy Fix. Why Poverty Persists and How to Change It – on how empathy is a prerequisite for tackling poverty.

The call for submissions to a “Roadmap for eradicating poverty beyond growth” by the UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights is still open until 30 March here.
